RAILWAY PHOTOGRAPHY FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Ethiopia Gallery
Addis Ababa has not seen a working train in the last two years. These shots were taken in December 2009 of what is left at the shed and station.
All shots in the Ethiopia Gallery are courtesy of Richard Gennis
The Chemin de fer Djibuuti-Ethiopian (CDE) has been around for over 100 years linking Addis Ababa with the port in Djibouti and used to be a single 1000mm gauge line of 784Km.
Currently only the section between Dire Dawa and Djibouti remains open with three passenger trains a week plus a few freight trains.
The track between Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa is in very poor condition and although there is a rehabilitation project only a small section has been completed in the last 2 years.
All trains are worked by Alsthom AD12Bs with the railcars being withdrawn. The older Alsthoms are used for shunting only.
There will be a fully captioned Ethiopia Gallery within the pages of the old style World Galleries next week
